Arielle, Brian, Alexandria – Forever Spartans
February 13, 2023 is a date that will always sit heavy in the heart of the Michigan State community. On that winter night, three young Spartans – Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser, and Alexandria Verner – were taken far too soon in a campus shooting that changed MSU forever.
Arielle Anderson, a 19-year-old sophomore from Harper Woods, had dreams of becoming a surgeon. She was driven, compassionate, and deeply committed to her studies, carrying the kind of quiet determination that reflects the best of what Michigan State strives to cultivate. Those who knew her spoke of her warmth and her desire to help others.
Brian Fraser, a 20-year-old sophomore from Grosse Pointe Park, was known for his steady presence and natural leadership. As president of his fraternity, he brought people together. Friends described him as loyal, welcoming, and the kind of person who made others feel at home.
Alexandria Verner, a 20-year-old junior from Clawson, carried a bright and caring spirit. She was remembered for her kindness, her creativity, and the genuine way she engaged with those around her.
In the days that followed, Berkey Hall, the MSU Union, and the broader East Lansing campus became places of mourning and reflection. Candlelight vigils lit the February night. Students, faculty, alumni, and families gathered not just to grieve, but to stand together. Green and white took on an added meaning – not just school colors, but symbols of unity and shared resilience.
Their names continue to be spoken. Degrees were awarded posthumously. Scholarships and memorial efforts ensure that their legacies endure. And each February 13, the Spartan community pauses to remember not just the tragedy, but the lives – full of promise, friendship, ambition, and love – that were lost.
Arielle. Brian. Alexandria.
Forever Spartans.
