A Big Ten Gut Check: MSU’s captains carry Spartans past Rutgers
The Spartans’ four captains carried the load in an overtime win that tested composure and resolve
By Michael Leek
There were plenty of takeaways from Michigan State’s overtime victory at Rutgers on Tuesday night. Jeremy Fears Jr. delivered another career night, the Spartans struggled offensively in the first half, and screen navigation remains an area that needs work. The biggest takeaway, however, was clear: Tom Izzo can rely on his captains when it matters most.
All four Spartan captains finished in double figures despite the team’s slow start. Carson Cooper, Jaxon Kohler, Coen Carr, and Fears combined for 66 of Michigan State’s 88 points. What was on display in New Jersey, just days before a rivalry matchup with Michigan, could raise some concerns. Still, it was ultimately more encouraging than alarming.
