Carson Cooper set the tone in Michigan State’s 82–59 win over UCLA
The senior big man emphasized defensive efficiency and composure in a crucial win
The Spartans picked up an 82-59 home win against conference competitor UCLA. The box score tells a different part of the story, with Jeremy Fears Jr. recording 16 points and 10 assists, while Jaxon Kohler added 10 rebounds. Six players connected from beyond the arc, shooting over 51.9 percent from three.
However, inside the locker room, Carson Cooper tells another story, discussing rebounding and defensive efficiency, playing against former teammate Xavier Booker, and a late-game standoff with UCLA’s Steven Jamerson.
“I think we did a great job of moving the ball and capitalizing off our offensive rebounds and stuff,” Cooper said. “When the guards hit shots, they just can’t sink in the paint and crowd everything up.”
The offensive rhythm was undeniable for the green and white, going on a first-half 20-3 run. The early shooting forced UCLA to stretch its defense, creating more room for Cooper to operate from inside the paint. Cooper’s most impressive stat line came from the free-throw line, shooting 8-9 from the line.
Despite this, Cooper wasn’t focused on his efficiency, but on his areas of improvement.
“Me and Cam, we didn’t do our job with the turnover margin,” Cooper said. “We’ve got to be better with that aspect to make sure that we can get our guards more shots.”
The efforts were defensive as well, holding the Bruins to 59 points, forcing tough shots, and limiting second-chance opportunities. Kohler secured double-digit rebounds, and Cooper shut down UCLA’s Tyler Bilodeau, a matchup he knew would require hard work.
“Bilodeau’s a great player,” Cooper said. “He’s playing his butt off, and he can do everything. I knew that it was going to be a challenge, and he had a really good game against us last year. For me, my mindset going in was to continue to do the job defensively and move my feet.”
