DETROIT - Two years ago, Alan Haller stood quietly in the back of this same press room inside Ford Field and knew exactly what he was going to do. Michigan State had just wrapped its 2023 season, and Haller had already settled on Jonathan Smith as the person who would reset the program.
Tonight, Smith stood on the same turf - this time as the man in charge - as Michigan State beat Maryland, 38–28. It was MSU’s first win in months. It was emotional, chaotic, and loud. In the background, though, news was developing. Sources were finally starting to talk.
