Jeremy Fears' halftime adjustments lift Michigan State to victory over pesky Colgate
This might be a resume win at the end of the season
Jeremy Fears Jr. walked through his postgame reflection the way he usually plays on the court: deliberate, analytical, and accountable.
The numbers from his night were immediately striking - 34 minutes, 14 points, five rebounds, a career-high 10 assists, and a tied career-high five steals. They could have been a celebration of performance, but for Fears, they were a framework, a measure of responsibility fulfilled and responsibility still to be earned.
“I didn’t do my job in the first half,” he said plainly. “Just not leading, not helping, and it kind of showed out there. I wasn’t the best defender I could be… I was on BS, I guess you could say.”
His words cut straight to the heart of what it means to be a point guard - and a captain.
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo echoed the sentiment in his postgame comments, saying that the missing ingredient in the first half was Fears’ leadership. When told this, Fears didn’t deflect.
