“Let This Bring Us Together”: Spartans search for cohesion after rivalry loss
After rallying from 16 down before falling to Michigan, the Spartans framed Friday night not as a setback, but as a test of cohesion and attention to detail.
“We just have to make sure that we come together as a team,” said Jaxon Kohler following Michigan State’s 83–71 loss to Michigan Friday night at the Breslin Center. “Let this experience and this feeling bring us closer together and not rip us apart."
Michigan State knew the hole they dug was avoidable. And they knew how close they came to climbing all the way out.
After trailing by 16 at halftime, Michigan State fought back possession by possession, took the lead in the second half, and put itself in position to steal a rivalry game before it slipped away late. While the decisive moments came at the end, the foundation of the loss was laid much earlier.
“We dug ourselves a hole that was so preventable,” Coen Carr said. “The fact that we fought back is good, but we just couldn’t get it done.”
Carr didn’t point to one fatal breakdown. He described an accumulation that just became too much to overcome.
