Michigan State' center Matt Gulbin ready to lead the Spartans in matchup with Nebraska
Senior captain and starting venter Matt Gulbin speaks on adversity, physicality, and looking forward to this week's matchup against Nebraska. He also shows his leadership through team building and praising the young players for their efforts.
As Michigan State gears up for a difficult road trip to Nebraska on Saturday afternoon, much of the focus has shifted to the mentality required to navigate the grind of the season. For starting center Matt Gulbin, the lessons of the past few weeks have underscored both the physical toll of the sport and the mental resolve it demands.
As a graduate transfer, the sixth-year senior arrived in East Lansing bringing his leadership and physicality to a Spartan program where grit is mandatory.
Voted in by his new team as a captain, Gulbin doesn’t shy away from the obvious truth — football is exhausting.
“It’s a physically demanding sport," Gulbin said. "We work hard during the week, so I’m ready to play on Saturdays."
Long practices, late-night kickoffs and cross-country travel can push the body to its limit. Yet, for Gulbin, these challenges are simply part of the job. Preparation during the week ensures that no matter the circumstances, the standard on Saturdays remains the same for the Spartans.
That standard, Gulbin acknowledged, wasn’t met in the opening half of Michigan State’s last outing at USC. While the Spartans responded with better execution after halftime, Gulbin knows that waiting to settle in won’t be enough against elite competition.
“You've got to show up to play," he said. "You can’t really have excuses."
