Michigan State tight end Jack Velling: 'We always have a chip on our shoulder'
Michigan State tight end Jack Velling discusses the Spartans' road matchup with Nebraska and the "chip" on the team's shoulder in 2025.
Coming off a bye week and sitting at 3-1 overall (0-1 in Big Ten play) on the 2025 season, Michigan State tight senior end Jack Velling mentioned that the team always has a chip on its shoulder as a group.
“We always have a chip on our shoulder as the offense,” Velling said. “We can go out and win every game if we just score every drive. So whoever we are playing, we just try to score as many points as possible — that is always our mindset.”
Velling reached the end zone for the first time in his 2025 campaign, and just the second time as a Spartan, versus USC on Sept. 20. He was able to score after a fake quarterback sneak set him up in an open position to secure the pass from quarterback Aidan Chiles.
Velling explained that film study paid off on his touchdown, as the way USC defended against that type of play in the past led to his score.
“It was just kind of something we noticed when teams go under center for that quarterback sneak that USC kind of tightens up,” Velling said. “It was really good because we actually called a sneak a couple of plays before. That is a play we have been practicing for a while and just kind of came out at the perfect time.”
