More committed and connected: Nick Marsh and Omari Kelly knock off Boston College
Michigan State earned redemption for last year’s loss at Boston College.
For Michigan State, this game wasn’t just a non-conference competition, but instead a chance at redeeming a self-inflicted late fourth-quarter loss at Boston College last season. This year's matchup was an emotional game for the green and white, showcasing the resilience and toughness of Jonathan Smith’s group and their ability to handle adversity.
In a double-overtime game, the Spartans took home a 42-40 win against the Eagles, a victory that could define this group's identity in the early season. They stayed composed under the pressure of a back-and-forth game and capped it off with a game-winning two-point conversion.
“This game for us was very important,” Marsh said. “It tested our brotherhood, our strength as a team. It tested how we can handle adversity. Going into overtime, going into double overtime, actually, and just keep fighting and keep straining. That showed a lot about us.”
The wide receiver front was a valuable asset for the Spartans, with sophomore Nick Marsh tallying 68 yards for five carries and two touchdowns. Senior Omari Kelly followed closely behind with four receptions for 60 yards.
Marsh was targeted eleven times in this game, while Kelly was targeted eleven times in week one. The wide receiver duo has opened up the Spartan offense, giving quarterback Aidan Chiles weapons to rely on.
Neither Marsh nor Kelly played in the Boston College match-up last season. Marsh was out with an injury in the 2024 game against BC, which only made him want the ball that much more this year, while Kelly was playing for Middle Tennessee at the time.
“My whole thought process going into the game was they didn’t have a taste of Nick Marsh,” Marsh said. “So I was ready. I felt like we had a pretty decent season leading up to them last year. They ended our little three-game win streak, so you know, it was really personal. I felt like that was kind of the downfall of our season last year, and I took it personally.”
The rest of the team made sure to set the tone for what this game would look like to new or younger guys.
“I knew it was going to be a very emotional game,” Kelly said. “You know, pre-game days were a little chippy, but building up to it, they were making sure everybody knew that it was a very important game, even though it’s out of conference and things like that. We knew deep down that it was a very important game that we had to take care of.”
