Find out which Spartans graded out well and which ones need improvement
The Michigan State Spartans won a tougher-than-expected game against the scrappy Penguins of Youngstown State this weekend.
Once again, let's look at the grades provided by Pro Football Focus to better understand each individual's performance in the 41-24 victory.
Table 1: Pro Football Focus snap counts and grades for the offense Michigan State in the Week Three win over Youngtown State
The Spartans had several offensive players that earned a grade over 75.0, including wide receiver Nick Marsh (90.5), tight end Jack Velling (79.5), and tight end Michael Masunas (77.4).
Several offensive lineman Luka Vincic (78.7), Matt Gulbin (78.3), and Conner Moore (76.4) also earned strong grades overall. For the second game in a row, Gavin Broscious (84.0) had a very strong grade in pass blocking.
Unfortunately, both Marsh (17 snaps) and Vincic (16 snaps) left the game early due to injury and each took fewer than 20 snaps.
The injury to Marsh resulted in a total of 42 snaps for Evan Boyd, who earned a grade of 55.4 overall, but got a solid grade (74.7) in run blocking. Rodney Bullard Jr. also excelled in run blocking (81.4). On the other side of the coin, Nick Marsh (59.2), Chrishon McCray (51.8) and Omari Kelly (42.2) all graded out very poorly in run blocking at the wide receiver.
At the running back position, Elijah Tau-Tolliver only took nine total snaps, but he earned the top overall grade (74.4) at the position.
It is also notable that left tackle Rustin Young (26 snaps) and Rakeem Johnson (four snaps) both saw their first game action.
Now let's turn to the defense:
