Quarterback Coach Jon Boyer on Aidan Chiles' growth and the double overtime win
For quarterback coach Jon Boyer, the most rewarding part of coaching is watching his players grow and celebrate hard-fought victories, like the double overtime win against Boston College. Now, Boyer and the Spartans look ahead to week three’s matchup against Youngstown State.
Michigan State’s double overtime win against Boston College was an emotional win for the Spartans. It was a victory that had quarterback coach Jon Boyer tearing up when the entire stadium was celebrating the win and while quarterback Aidan Chiles embraced the moment by lifting Boyer’s son into the air for a hug.
“He earned that opportunity,” Boyer said. “And then for me to be a part of that, and then my son to be a part of that at the end of the game with the big hug, that’s what it’s about.”
For Boyer, this moment was more than just a celebration for Chiles and the Spartans, but a moment where months of coaching and hard work translated to results on the field. The green and white didn’t luck out on its 42-40 win against the Eagles or in overtime. They earned it, Boyer explained, as it was something they practiced heavily.
“We’re very specific,” Boyer said. “We go through the exact situation. We practice it, and we went through fall camp practicing overtime. They’re motivated, they’re locked in, but you make them aware of the situation and come up with a few key coaching points, maybe about the next play or the sequence that’s about to transpire on the field. But no, it’s when you practice, you’re going to play the way you prepare, and we were prepared for that moment.”
The whole team was prepared from that moment, having practiced executing it and learning from previous mistakes. That is something Chiles has shown is a strength of his to Boyer. At the start of the second half, the Spartans were down seven and came out hot, scoring a touchdown on their first drive which was started from a 41-yard pass to wide receiver Omari Kelly.
