The Waiting Game: Rodney Bullard Jr. and the road to a final season at MSU
MSU's wide receiver is locked in a high-stakes eligibility battle with the NCAA
Rodney Bullard Jr. has been telling his teammates "any day now" since January.
The Michigan State wide receiver, who became a fan favorite last season after an explosive 71-yard touchdown catch against Minnesota, is currently locked in a high-stakes waiting game with the NCAA.
At the center of the drama is a complex eligibility appeal that will determine whether Bullard can suit up for the Spartans in 2026 or if his college football story has already reached its final chapter.
The "Clock" Dilemma
Bullard’s journey to the Big Ten is anything but traditional. After graduating high school at just 16 years old during the 2020 pandemic, he enrolled at Valdosta State in 2021 as a part-time student.
He wasn't there to play football, he was just a regular student focused on finishing his degree early. The trouble started when Valdosta State coaches spotted Bullard working out with players on the practice field in the spring of 2022. They asked why he wasn't on the team, to which he simply replied: "Y'all didn't recruit me."
He joined the squad that fall, but because he had been part-time previously, he was forced to redshirt. Now, the NCAA is arguing his "eligibility clock" began the moment he stepped on campus in 2021...
